Editorial Design
Designing magazine spreads using typography and imagery.
Brief: Create 4 magazine spreads using an article from The Conversation.
This is an editorial design project for a magazine article about early onset dementia, concussion and tackling in children’s rugby. The brief stated to use an article of your choice and create a series of magazine spreads to represent the article and its information.
I chose an article called ‘Tackling in children’s rugby must be banned to curb dementia risks’. The article talks about the impact of tackling in rugby and how there are many former professional rugby players that are experiencing signs of dementia as early as 40 years old due to concussions and brain injuries acquired when they were younger in the prime time of their sporting careers.
In this project I have used my own illustrations as the main component of the page spread designs. The images show rugby players being tackled in a game. The impact of these collisions has caused the image to ‘break’ or ‘shatter’. There are shapes and pieces flying off of the images to show the damage of repeated tackling in rugby and what it does to the brain and the body. This is also shown in the word ‘Dementia’ in the title of the heading page.
The typography of the body text is in similar shaped text boxes to the shapes and pieces ‘flying’ off of the illustrations. Having the body text in this more interesting shape means that it creates more shapes on the spread. It creates shapes out of the white space around the text and the image. This has been continued throughout all of the article spreads and pages.
