Designing With Type

A display typeface and motion design piece inspired by film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Brief: Using your given film, draw inspiration from it to inform the design of an experimental display typeface. The typeface to include letters A-Z and numbers 0-9.

Part 2: Create an animation piece to support the typeface.

The film I was given was 2001: A Space Odyssey. The concept behind this typeface design is using shapes that stand out from the film to create the letter forms.

The rectangular shapes represent the monolith that appears throughout the film. The circle shapes represent ‘HAL’, the artificial intelligent computer with a human personality. On the set of the film, particularly in the space ship and in the house and bedroom in the final scenes of the film, there is use of geometric shapes to create the spacecraft interior, and the especially the flooring of the rooms in the final scenes in Jupiter.

The name of this typeface is, ‘Sojourn’. This means a temporary stay. I have called it this because my animation looks like you are moving with stars and shapes travelling past, then it all reverses itself and all comes back to the beginning again.
